The View From the Hill: Why Bernal Connect
Why Bernal Connect? And Why Now?
Why Now?
Every morning, the fog rolls over the ridge, the sun hits the western slopes, and our little corner of San Francisco comes alive.
As a longtime resident, I’ve watched the evolution of our neighborhood firsthand. I’ve seen businesses come and go, families grow up, and the landscape shift. Yet, even as the city changes around us, Bernal Heights has kept its soul.
It’s easy to get comfortable here. In fact, many of us rarely venture more than a few blocks from our own front doors—and who can blame us? But Bernal offers an entire world of wonder to explore if you know where to look. We are a beautiful patchwork of micro-neighborhoods: from the vibrant, culturally diverse Mission corridor to the community hubs of Precita Park and St. Mary’s, down to the industrial grit and innovation along Bayshore Boulevard, and back up to the bustling, small-town village feel of Cortland Avenue.
We are home to hidden green spaces, a thriving community of independent merchants, and one of the oldest, most historic Alemany Farmer’s Markets in California.
It is all right here. But until now, it’s lived scattered across different corners of the neighborhood.
In an era where local journalism is shrinking and algorithms dictate how we interact, we are losing the connective tissue that binds a community together. We know our immediate neighbors, but do we know the artist three blocks down, the history of the house on the corner, or the challenges facing the shopkeeper on Cortland?
Bernal Connect was born out of a desire to bridge those gaps. It is a dedicated space to celebrate, document, and preserve the unique magic of our cherished hillside community. Whether you’re a multi-generational resident who remembers the neighborhood’s bohemian roots, or a newcomer looking to plant your own, this is your digital front porch.
