A Conversation with Michelle Thomas

Tell us about your background and what inspired you to open Michelle Thomas Fine Art.

Throughout my career, I have maintained a parallel painting practice alongside work in structured organizations. I enjoy working with a team and exploring the boundaries of traditional systems. I began my career as a teacher, then moved into creative project management, but I have always wanted to share art-making techniques and unlock creative potential. Michelle Thomas Fine Art Gallery + Studio weaves these interests into a multifaceted community offering.

What sets Michelle Thomas Fine Art apart from other galleries in the area?

We offer a diverse range of art programs, including exhibitions, performances, and classes for all ages. Our space is available for public and private events, with two distinct levels: the street level houses my studio and the gallery. In contrast, the garden level provides a membership-based creative workspace for artists and hobbyists.

How do you curate the artwork and events at your gallery?

We focus on new work by artists addressing cultural, thematic, and disciplinary intersections, margins, and collisions: a florist who writes poetry, or an architect who is also a photographer. We highlight artists who ponder the process, the in-between, the act of figuring it out, the awakening, and the moment before the revolution. These are constant motifs in my own work, so I show artists with whom I can see a thematic dialogue. We also offer a variety of price points, with pieces ranging from $25 to $1,300, because we believe art collecting is for everyone.

Can you describe a memorable event or exhibition you have hosted?

We held an Intro to Watercolors class series attended by adults whose career paths had taken them away from the arts, spanning fields from law to biotech. It was remarkable to see how open they were as they tapped into their latent creative talent to create gorgeous paintings with an unpredictable medium.

What challenges have you faced as a gallery owner, and how have you overcome them?

I was raised in Chicago by gentle Indian parents who listened to me when I spoke, consoled me when I cried, and encouraged modesty. They took me to parks, restaurants, art museums, ballet, tap, and jazz classes, and concerts at Navy Pier followed by long walks along Lake Michigan. While I had a childhood similar to Joan Mitchell’s and received a formal education in the arts, I haven't had the same experience with arts spaces in the U.S. run by people who look like me.

Now at 40, with extensive experience working in schools, galleries, museums, and on design teams, I am confident in my ability to define and articulate a space that supports creative activity and recreates environments where people can flourish.

How do you cultivate a sense of community and engage with the neighborhood?

For hobbyists, the studio is meant to be a sanctuary and a refuge. In adult life, we lack the dedicated practice rooms of our school days: the orchestra risers, the art room, or the cubbies with our names holding dance shoes, brushes, or sheet music. After seven years as an art teacher advocating for sensitive and vulnerable young people, I designed the studio to comfort and protect highly sensitive people by managing light, sound, and scent. Hence, their softer selves feel safe to emerge. Studio membership offers individuals a place to dedicate time to art before returning to their roles as parents, caregivers, or workers. For professional artists, I foster open communication to help them feel comfortable proposing shows, collaborations, and events.

Additionally, I dedicate significant time to creating art right in our storefront window. Passers-by often stop mid-stride to watch the painting process. I love it when neighbors drop by to watch a work-in-progress unfold and develop a deeper appreciation for the creative life cycle.

What strategies do you employ to promote your artists and events?

I try to reduce screen time and intensify engagement with the physical world, prioritizing genuine relationships with people who crave something tangible. While we use social media and email campaigns, I place greater emphasis on designing beautiful exhibition announcement postcards that recipients want to collect, sharing posters with strategic partners, and having authentic conversations in the community. I want gallery patrons to feel they have discovered a local gem and take pride in sharing it with others.

Can you share any upcoming projects or exhibitions?

Our current exhibition, ON BEAUTY, features floral design, paintings by Nirmala Thangam, and my watercolor collages. Upcoming programming includes a botanical silk printing class with fiber artist Mayumi Fujio, a book launch party for local comic artist Chuck Whelon, and a new exhibition featuring local photographer Alese Rivera.

Why did you choose Mission Bernal for your business?

I live near Twin Peaks and originally selected the 29th Street corridor at the intersection of Noe Valley, the Mission, and Bernal Heights because it complements our motif of an identity “in-between” various currents. After settling in and spending time with lovely neighbors like Cafe Seventy8, STEMful, and Komaaj, I am certain I made the right decision. I look forward to building our support network and spending many fruitful years together.

Ramzy grew up on Cortland Avenue. His father ran Pay Little Market here for 32 years, and now Ramzy works next door at Seafood Station, the restaurant he opened.

It began with a craving. He loved seafood boils and couldn’t find a good one anywhere in San Francisco, so he and his team made their own version. Picking the neighborhood took no deliberation. “It’s a part of my family history,” he says.

The size of the place

Seafood Station is small, and Ramzy likes it that way. Fewer tables means the kitchen can stay consistent and take its time with each plate. But he cares more about how the room feels. He wants people to walk in and feel like part of the family. “We treat our customers like family,” he says.

Victor Fadayel noticed. In a comment on Bernal Connect, he called it a great family-friendly place:

The food

The mussels, chorizo, and lime came from the restaurant’s chef, who is from San Marco, Guatemala. The broth is heavy cream, Mexican-style chorizo, lime juice, and chicken broth. The cioppino is the San Francisco standard, a stew of clams, mussels, shrimp, and cod that has been around since the 1800s, served with two slices of garlic bread. Ramzy’s own favorite is the cod tacos, which he describes as light, flaky, and fresh.

The seafood comes from local markets and fishermen he trusts. The team inspects it and prepares it fresh each day. Victor called the food “scrumptious and delicious” and said the prices were good and the service great.

The block

Ask Ramzy about running a business on Cortland, and he answers fast. “Being in Cortland is everything to me.”

His uncle opened Pay Little Market and ran it for five years before selling it to Ramzy’s father, who kept it going for the next 32. The market is no longer family-run; it's now SF Tequila Shop, but the family stayed. Seafood Station sits next door, and on the other side, Ramzy’s cousin Paul runs Pizza Express.

After all those years on Cortland, Ramzy and Paul are the next generation on the block. They hope to hand it down to their own children someday.

People come in from all over the world, Ramzy says, and he hears the same thing from most of them: they leave feeling appreciated. Terri Hanagan, a regular, wrote in April 2025 that Seafood Station is now her favorite local restaurant:

What’s next

Ramzy’s idea of a day off is eating at other seafood restaurants to see what they’re doing. A new menu is coming, and he hopes to add pasta and salads.

Asked what he’d tell someone opening their own place, he doesn’t hedge: never give up.

Get to Know Your Neighbor: Rina of Indigo Rickshaw

If you’ve wandered around Bernal Heights and stumbled across jewel-toned watercolors or a hand-thrown ceramic palette that looks almost too pretty to use, there’s a good chance you’ve met Rina’s work already — even if you haven’t met Rina.

Rina is the artist, maker, and neighbor behind Indigo Rickshaw, a small studio built on a wonderfully simple idea: follow your curiosity and see where it takes you.

How it all started

Rina’s road to running a business is anything but typical. By day (and often by night), she’s an infectious diseases physician. She’s also a parent and homeschooler, which means her plate is already full before “art studio owner” enters the picture. But that’s exactly how it happened — Rina set out to solve one small, practical problem: building herself the perfect portable art kit.

That one project opened a door. She went down the rabbit hole of paint chemistry, experimenting with honey, gum arabic, and artist-grade pigments until she was making her own watercolors from scratch. What started as a personal fix for a personal problem grew into something bigger: small-batch handmade paints, custom ceramic palettes, and journals now reach artists and curious makers everywhere.

Creativity with a conscience

Talk to Rina for five minutes, and you'll notice two things she cares about deeply: bold color and doing things sustainably. She loves rescuing and repurposing vintage art supplies, giving old materials a second act instead of letting them go to waste. And while she’ll be the first to admit the “perfect” portable art pouch she set out to build is still a work in progress, that hasn’t stopped her from encouraging the rest of us to make art wherever we happen to be.

A neighborhood kind of business

Don’t expect a rigid five-year business plan from Indigo Rickshaw. Rina runs things by instinct and inquiry — each new product or collection grows out of her ongoing curiosity about color, materials, and craft. It’s a refreshing reminder of what makes Bernal Heights businesses special: people building things out of passion, not formula, with community woven into every step.

How a Haunted Childhood Became a Career

Jon Shafran turns Victorian homes in Presidio Heights, Pacific Heights, and Laurel Heights into full-blown Halloween displays. He joined Mike and Tracy on Bernal Connect to talk about how a childhood fascination turned into a business and why he thinks Halloween might be the most neighborly holiday of all.

A Haunted Childhood

Jon grew up on the west side of Los Angeles, surrounded by Hollywood influence — many of his neighbors worked in film and TV. Every October, some of them, professional stage designers and artists, turned their yards into elaborate haunted houses. As a 13-year-old, Jon found the displays equal parts thrilling and terrifying — a mix that planted the seed. He’s been collecting decorations for 30 years. That collection became Presidio Frights: a business that helps homeowners who love the idea of an elaborate display but lack the time, storage, or know-how to pull it off. Jon handles the design, setup, storage, and teardown.

The September 1st Rule

September 1 is the unofficial start date for Halloween planning in Jon’s household — though he notes stores now stock merchandise as early as late August. By late September, he’s typically fully booked, already turning away requests in neighborhoods he can’t currently serve. With Halloween falling on a Saturday this year, he expects an even bigger turnout than usual.

Spooky, Not Gory

Jon’s creative approach is about balance: G-rated displays mixed with more intense elements, though he’s found straight gore doesn’t land well. Classic monsters and spiders outperform violence. Off the clock, though, he’s not much of a costume guy — he’s more likely to dress as a handyman or plumber, something functional he can work in.

More Than Decorations

What stands out most in Jon’s conversation isn’t the business — it’s what he thinks Halloween does for a neighborhood. Unlike holidays centered on family, he sees it as built around meeting your neighbors, which resonated with Mike’s own sense of Halloween as a distinctly American tradition. That same spirit drives neighborhood events like Halloween on Cortland, where the street closes to cars for an early-ending, family-friendly celebration.

Here’s the thing about SF Tequila Shop: if you visited once, early on, and filed it away as “the tequila place,” you’re working off outdated information. Four years and a lot of curiosity later, owners Moose and Scott have built something that barely resembles a single-category shop anymore — even though tequila is still very much where it all started.

With a 4.9-star rating across nearly 200 Google reviews, it’s not just locals who’ve taken notice. Regulars consistently point to the same things: a deep, hard-to-find selection that goes well beyond what you’d expect from a neighborhood shop, staff who clearly know their craft rather than just moving product, and a habit of bringing in distillers from around Mexico for in-person tastings. Moose in particular comes up again and again — customers describe him as the kind of person who always seems to recommend exactly the right bottle, whether you’re a total beginner or a self-described tequila nerd.

The expansion nobody saw coming.

Mezcal was the first departure — smoky, funky, regional, and a natural cousin to tequila. But then things got more ambitious. Mexican rum that holds its own against Caribbean classics. Gin infused with native botanicals youwon'tt find anywhere else in the city—even Mexican wine, which still catches people off guard. One recent reviewer even mentioned stumbling onto a surprisingly good beer fridge tucked into the shop.

The team's pitch is simple: most people have no idea Mexico produces world-class spirits beyond tequila — and four years in, this shop has become the place that proves it.

It is inspiring to see how a neglected stretch of asphalt can be transformed into a vibrant neighborhood asset. Reclaiming an unaccepted street on Ogden Avenue between Folsom and Gates into the future home of Ogden Avenue Gardens is a powerful testament to community-led urban renewal. Bernal Heights will undoubtedly benefit from having another dedicated green space that prioritizes native plantings, pedestrian walkability, and local environmental stewardship.

A COMMUNITY PROJECT BY GREENING PROJECTS – BERNAL HEIGHTS, SAN FRANCISCO

We are neighbors working to transform a neglected, weed-strewn street into a children’s playground, a community gathering place, and a safe, comfortable place to wait for the bus.

The 400 block of Ogden Avenue (between Folsom and Gates) is an “unaccepted street”, meaning the city does not maintain it. It has no sidewalk. Yet it is a heavily used path to the bus stop for local parents walking their toddlers to Ana’s Childcare and for neighbors walking their dogs.

“I’m in it for the wags. The delighted one at the door when you turn up. And then the better one an hour later, when a dog has had a proper walk, is home, and is ready to sleep it off, slower, heavier, thoroughly pleased with itself. That second wag is the entire product. — Daniel Oviedo, founder, The Long Way.

Daniel’s favorite route starts at the top of the hill and ends at the bottom of it: up along Ellsworth, a long sniff stop at the summit, then down the Esmeralda steps toward Precita and back home. It’s not the fastest way to walk a dog, but that was never the goal. The Long Way, his small-group dog walking club in Bernal Heights, Noe Valley, and Potrero Hill, was built around exactly that kind of walk.

“I live here in Bernal with Luka, a husky who has never once agreed that a walk was long enough,” he says. “That’s where the name came from, and honestly where the whole idea started.” He fell for the neighborhood slowly, on foot, the way most people around here seem to. Fog rolling over the hill in the morning. Stairways that turn a ten-minute walk into forty. Knowing which dog belonged to which stoop long before he knew any of the neighbors’ names.

Never More Than Three

Three is the number that defines the business: the maximum number of dogs on any walk, always with the same walker. “I am the person at your door on every single walk. Not a team, not a rotation. Me.” Every walk starts and ends at the dog’s own front door, on foot: an hour outside, in a neighborhood the dogs already know.

A report card from a recent Wednesday shows what that actually looks like. Lucy, a Bernal member, out for an hour with Luka and a wirehaired newcomer named Freya. The numbers: 2.2 miles, 335 feet of hill, leashes loose the whole way up. Freya’s sniff commitment came back: “A, with honors. A scholar of yarrow. Very pleased with her findings.” Lucy took an A+ in hosting, for welcoming the new dog while, as her card put it, hardly adding to the production. Water topped off, door double-checked on the way out.

Before a dog joins the club, Daniel meets them at home first: temperament, commands, routines, quirks, medical needs, home access, and emergency contacts, all written down before a leash gets clipped. Dogs are matched into groups on purpose, not assigned at random. “Good care isn’t a promise,” Daniel says. “It’s a procedure.”

The matching may be working a little too well. One member’s owner reports being towed, mid-errand, off their usual route and up the front steps of a clubmate’s house: tail up, no hesitation, wrong day. The two walk together on weekdays. Nobody has told the dog that the friendship is supposed to stay on the clock.

An Overnight Option, Too

Since launching, Daniel has added a second service: overnight house sitting at the client’s home, called Long Way Nights, in the same neighborhoods.

“When I go away, I’d rather have someone stay at my place with Luka, where he’s comfortable, and his routinedoesn'tt change,” he says. “So that’s what I offer. I come to the dog’s home, and the dog’s world stays put.” Same idea as the walks, just stretched overnight: don’t disrupt the dog’s world, just put someone reliable in it.

Somebody has to keep the plants alive between now and whenever the plaza becomes a permanent, sustainable green environment. That’s the honest, slightly funny problem at the center of this episode of Bernal Connect, where hosts Mike and Tracy sat down with Ariel Vaughan of Civic Joy Fund to talk about how Bernal Heights is layering green space onto its public plazas while that vision takes shape.

The plaza in front of the Bernal Heights Rec Center is still a place to bike and roller skate; that hasn’t changed. What’s new are the additions: planters, young trees, seating, and a nature play area for kids, all added on top of the space’s existing life rather than replacing it. Ariel explained the thinking behind the approach: rather than asking neighbors to react to a conceptual drawing, Civic Joy Fund and its partners install real, low-cost elements so people can experience the changes firsthand and weigh in before the space becomes a permanent, sustainable green environment. Civic Joy Fund teamed up with Greening Projects and SF Rec and Park on the plaza work, and has funded on-site music and art events to draw people in and gather that feedback.

The neighbors seem to like what they’re seeing. But Ariel was blunt about the tradeoff nobody advertises: the city will let you install a pop-up green space on public property, but it won’t water it for you. That job falls to whoever holds the permit, which means someone has to show up for weeding, watering, and the occasional fight with gravel that’s wandered somewhere it shouldn’t be. Civic Joy Fund’s answer is a volunteer steward program, and Mike confirmed the sign-up link for weekly watering shifts is live now.

The plaza isn’t the only spot getting this treatment. Ariel described a new SFMTA pilot called “Community Corners,” which puts planters inside painted street safety zones, starting near the library on Cortland. A similar setup is going in near Moultrie, where The Barb Shop has volunteered to keep those planters watered. It’s the same pattern everywhere: a nonprofit, a city agency, and a local business each doing one small piece.

More is coming. A one-time bench painting event hits the plaza on September 12 (about a two-hour commitment), birdhouse painting is on deck, and the calendar rolls straight into the Bernal Village Marketplace, Fiesta on the Hill, and Halloween on Cortland. Down the road, two new gardens, Ogden Ave Gardens and Gateway Community Gardens, are aiming to break ground this spring or fall.

None of this works without people willing to grab a watering can. That’s really the story here: not the planters themselves, but the neighbors, shopkeepers, and volunteers who keep them alive.

Bernal Heights got an introduction to GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® this week, as the Bernal Connect podcast welcomed Harriet, founder of Movement for Everyone, to discuss her studio's recent move to Mission Street. The conversation, hosted by Mike and Tracy, ranged from the mechanics of specialized fitness equipment to neighborhood safety perceptions, local restaurant favorites, an upcoming garage sale, and a brewing real estate story on Bradford Street.

A New Home on Mission Street

Movement for Everyone relocated to its Synced Studio space on June 1st, at 3180 Mission Street, between Cesar Chavez and Valencia. For those unfamiliar with the block, Harriet pointed to nearby landmarks like El Rio and Lion’s Den to help people find the space.

During the taping, Harriet noted that a class taught by an instructor named Avon was happening in the background, and she asked Mike to flag it if the audio quality suffered as a result — a small window into a studio that’s very much a working space, not just a backdrop for the interview.

What GYROTONIC® Actually Is

For listeners unfamiliar with the practice, Harriet walked through the basics. GYROTONIC® was originally developed for dancers in the 1980s, and it remains a bit of a hard sell precisely because so few people have heard of it. She demonstrated several pieces of equipment, including a pulley tower and handle unit, and walked through exercises focused on sitting posture, side bending, and rotation.

The equipment isn’t cheap — Harriet estimated around $6,700 per piece — and using it properly requires training, which sets it apart from more accessible options like the reformers sold on Amazon. Resistance comes from a system of handles and a weight stack designed to stay consistent throughout each movement, which Harriet said helps with posture, circulation, shoulder mechanics, and neuromotor retraining.

Who It’s For

Harriet’s client base is broad: dancers, marathon runners, high-level athletes, people recovering from injury, pregnant women, restaurant workers, and people managing chronic pain. She described one case of a runner with nerve pain who saw significant improvement after just five sessions.

Clients can work with her one-on-one or in small group tower classes. She generally recommends two sessions a week for most people, though that can range from once to three times weekly depending on someone’s goals, condition, and existing routine. For clients with more limited mobility, she also offers gyrokinesis, a related but gentler practice. Harriet was quick to note she isn’t in the business of upselling — her recommendations are based on what actually helps.

She also touched on a common pattern in her practice: low back pain, neck and shoulder pain, and posture issues tied to sedentary lifestyles, along with conditions like frozen shoulder in perimenopausal women. GYROTONIC® isn’t currently covered by insurance, but Harriet said she frequently works alongside physical therapists and other healthcare providers, continuing a client’s rehabilitation under a PT’s guidance even after insurance coverage runs out. She emphasized a holistic approach to treating injuries, given the interconnectedness of the body’s systems.

From Ballet to Bernal

Harriet’s own path to gyrotonic wound through dance. She studied at the Boston Conservatory, later worked as a legal assistant, and discovered gyrotonic while taking ballet classes in San Francisco. A union representative encouraged her to pursue training as an instructor, and she moved to Bernal Heights in 2015, where she’s now raising two children. Asked about neighborhood favorites, she named Vega, VinoRosso, and Moki’s — while her kids, she said, are partial to Ediname’s.

Rethinking the Mission Bernal Corridor

The conversation also turned to how people perceive safety along the Mission Bernal corridor. Harriet admitted she used to avoid the area, especially while pregnant, put off by how dirty and difficult it seemed to walk there. These days, she said, it’s a regular stop for coffee and pastries with her family. She and Tracy traded recommendations up and down the corridor — El Buen Comer, City Taqueria, and Blue Plate among them — and Mike encouraged listeners to venture past Cortland Avenue to explore what’s there.

The Habit We Inherited

Most people’s relationship with tequila started somewhere loud: a bar, a bachelorette party, a dare. The ritual of salt-shot-lime was never about the spirit itself—it was a delivery system for getting alcohol into your body as fast as possible while limiting the damage to your taste buds. That’s a fine strategy for well tequila. It’s a shame when it gets applied to something someone spent years making.

The problem is the habit sticks. Even when the tequila in the glass costs more per bottle than the whole bar tab from that college night, the reflex kicks in. Shoot it, wince, reach for the lime. The tequila never had a chance to say anything.

What Premium Tequila Is Actually Trying to Tell You

Good tequila, particularly a blanco made from 100% blue weber agave, carries flavors that the shot-and-chase ritual is specifically designed to bury: cooked agave, black pepper, citrus peel, sometimes a mineral note that tastes almost like wet stone. Rest it in oak for a reposado or añejo and you add vanilla, caramel, baking spice, maybe a whisper of chocolate. None of that registers if the tequila is in your mouth for less than a second.

Tequila makers aren’t distilling for a five-second experience. They’re distilling for the fifteen seconds after you swallow, when the flavor actually unfolds. Shooting it skips the whole point.

How to Actually Taste It

• Pour less than you think you should. An ounce, maybe less. This isn’t a contest of volume.

• Look at it first. Blanco should be clear. Reposado and añejo pick up color from the barrel, pale straw to deep amber. Color gives you a hint of what’s coming.

• Nose it gently. Don’t stick your nose all the way in and inhale like you’re trying to identify a crime scene. Tequila is high-proof; a hard sniff just gets you a lungful of ethanol. Approach from a few inches away, mouth slightly open, and let the aroma come to you.

• Take a small sip and hold it. Let it sit on your tongue before swallowing. You’re feeling for texture as much as flavor, is it oily, sharp, round, thin?

• Exhale through your nose after you swallow. This is called retronasal breathing, and it’s where most of the flavor actually shows up. The finish is often more telling than the first sip.

• Skip the training wheels. No salt, no lime, no immediate chaser. If the tequila is well made, it doesn’t need to be disguised. If you want something alongside it, a small glass of water and maybe a bit of orange are traditional in Jalisco, but they’re meant to complement, not cover.

Sipping Doesn’t Mean Precious

None of this means turning into someone insufferable at a party who lectures people about agave terroir. It just means giving the tequila five extra seconds before you decide what to do with it. You can still have fun with tequila—it just doesn’t have to be at the tequila’s expense.

The next time someone hands you a pour of something they clearly care about, try holding onto it a little longer than instinct tells you to. You might be surprised at what you’ve been missing every time you rushed past it.

We are a beautiful patchwork of micro-neighborhoods: from the vibrant, culturally diverse Mission corridor to the community hubs of Precita Park and St. Mary’s, down to the industrial grit and innovation along Bayshore Boulevard, and back up to the bustling, small-town village feel of Cortland Avenue.
